Living in a country like South Africa places the raw beauty of nature at our doorstep, however it also provides us with a first-hand understanding of how we humans impact our environment. Washed up plastic litter on beautiful beaches is unfortunately not a rare sighting. This is an issue, Ruben Hazelzet (founder of SoapboxSA) eagerly wanted to find a solution for. But how do you change our deeply rooted relationship with plastic? One word: Education.
SoapboxSA conducted several focus groups with primary school kids in Khayelitsha (Cape Town) to test their knowledge about plastic pollution and develop a story: The Legend of Captain Fanplastic. After that we incorporated theory, creativity and gamification to create a wholesome program that invites learners into a world of learning and doing. With this we hope to provide new generations with relevant education the world needs
